Slow Pedagogy: Finding the balance in pedagogy and practice

Presented by

Philip Butler

Due to its popularity as a workshop at INSPIRE, we have decided to ask Phil to present this as a webinar APST 1: Know children and how they learn Presented by Philip Butler

Do you find yourself rushing through the day? Are you more focused on keeping up and getting through it than fostering a sense of connection and quality? What are the signs of a high-quality program? Is it the number of activities planned each day? The variety of resources and materials provided? The frequency of group times? Or the volume of documentation and photos we produce?  Like many aspects of life, early childhood pedagogy is more about the quality of our actions than the quantity of what we do. We gain more by viewing our practices through the lens of ‘slow pedagogy’ — allowing more time for connection, greater opportunities to build and maintain relationships, increased child agency, and deeper ties to meaningful and impactful documentation and planning cycles. This webinar will challenge participants to re-evaluate their beliefs about what quality pedagogy can and should encompass. It will encourage participants to advocate for slowing down and collaborating more closely with children. Ultimately, it will empower participants with the will and desire to resist the constant rush of the early childhood sector and everything that comes with it.

Completing Slow Pedagogy: Finding the balance in pedagogy and practice may contribute one hour of PD that aligns with the NESA (NSW) approved criteria and addresses:

The Australian Professionals Standards for Teachers: APST 1: Know children and how they learn

Early Years Learning Framework Learning Outcomes: Outcome 1: Children have a strong sense of identity

The National Quality Standard: QA 5: Relationships with children
